DNS Issues

So I got up this morning to be greeted with an unreachable site only to discover the Dynamic Name System (DNS) information was messed up during the domain transfer. The problems are fixed but DNS changes can take some time to propagate so if you’re reading this you have the correct information, if you can’t read this you know something is amiss but you’ll not see this until all is well again.

Today’s lesson: DNS transfers never go as smoothly as they should.

Enjoy Your Canned Posts

As you read this I’m probably sitting at the airport preparing material for another post where I rant about the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). No I’m not off to join SHOT Show late into the event, I’ve been called away on work. This development means my ability to post is going to be hit or miss. Knowing this ahead of time I’ve decided to write up some canned posts for the duration of my time away. Should anything interesting or exciting happen I’ll try to blog about it but I can make no such guarantee and therefore any analysis on late breaking news may be later than usual (since I’m rarely timely to begin with this shouldn’t surprise anybody).

You guys have fun and try not to break anything while I’m gone. Also I hope you enjoyed the first of my canned posts that allowed me to skirt my responsibilities and get my post count up without actually writing anything of value. I promise the rest will be far better though.

As the Internet Goes Dark

It appears as though half of the Internet is going dark tomorrow in protest of SOPA and PROTECT-IP. Wikipedia, Reddit, BoingBoing, MoveOn (hopefully they stay dark), The Daily Paul, and even my own sister’s website are going to be unavailable. This move will certainly increase the productivity of the human race notably if nothing else.

So what about myself, is A Geek With Guns going dark? Not a chance. It’s going to take a lot more than PROTECT-IP (since SOAP is effectively dead) to shut me up. Even if PROTECT-IP passed and government were to accuse me of violating copyright causing my domain name service (DNS) records to be hijacked I’ll setup a new domain name, a Tor hidden service (which I’m planning on doing anyways), or some other workaround because I refuse to submit to censorship.

I can also tell you that the second PROTECT-IP passes I’m going to setup my own DNS server that will give the correct IP address to sites that have been blocked by those pricks in Washington. The IP address of this DNS server will be given out to all who want it so they can bypass the state’s censorship as well.

Scheduled Maintenance this Weekend

You guys have done it, you’ve hit my server hard enough that I’m quickly running low on available RAM. While I will consider this a metric of my success it does mean I have to upgrade the little server. I’ve ordered more RAM which will be here Friday so sometime between Friday evening and Monday morning this site will be down for a short while (probably all of five minutes, you’ll likely not even notice).

After the upgrade this site will be… the same as before most likely. Thanks everybody for reading and giving me a headache that’s cheap and easy to correct. It’s far better than those headaches that are expensive and time consuming to alleviate.

Vacation Time

Dear readers it has come time again for my annual vacation. I’m going to be taking the week off and heading to Defcon on Las Vegas. Why do you care? Ultimately because my vacation will directly interfere with this blog as I’m not really planning on making promises to write up posts during my off time (for me a vacation means skirting all of my responsibilities, not just my job).

Never fear though because I’ve planned ahead and have some material pre-written for the days I’ll be gone. I’ve written a sort of mini-series that will provide one post a day and then threw in some miscellaneous posts for good measure. It’s unlikely that I’ll be posting while I’m at Defcon because that place is a war zone when it comes to network and honestly nothing can be considered truly safe. I’m not saying you won’t see any posts I haven’t already pre-written but I’m making no promises that you won’t.

So while I’m away you’ll likely notice only a reduction in the number of posts that appear per day and that those posts likely won’t be related to anything that happened after today. Let me close by saying this… FUCK YEAH VACATION TIME!

Possible Site Maintenance This Weekend

Just to let everybody know this site may be unavailable at some point this weekend depending on how ambitious I get. I’m thinking about upgrading my web server to OS X Lion but won’t be sure until I’ve figured out some of the finer points (like how to get MySQL working on OS X Lion Server again).

If the site is unavailable I’m probably upgrading it, if it remains available I probably decided not to mess with it.
