But I Thought Gun Control Made Us Safer

That’s what the Brady Bunch tell use at least. Well tell that to Chicago, a city with some of the strictest gun control laws on the books. In one night over 15 people were wounded in shootings…

http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/07/shootings-wound-at-least-15-overnight.html

Once again we have proof that gun control doesn’t work. In fact I’d say this is pretty good evidence that gun control is harmful. If any of these 15 people would have been allowed to legally carry a gun they would have had a better chance of defending themselves and preventing any of the hoodlums from committing future crimes. Not to mention the hoodlums would be less likely to commit crimes if they realized there was a good chance of being shot and killed in the process.

Let Chicago be an example of what is wrong with gun control and taking away peoples’ right to self defense.

Senators Move to Make Texting While Driving Illegal

Remember that post yesterday about the study that said people who text while driving are 23 times more likely to crash their car? Well to prove once again that no tragedy (or study in this case) should be left unexploited some senators on capital hill are going to introduce legislation to make texting while driving illegal…

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jQIakqMFgrC0KAeMfxrWUQCz2U2QD99O2NL04

The legislation will use the federal government’s favorite weapon against state rights, money. Pretty much if a state doesn’t introduce a law making texting while driving illegal they lose their federal highway funding.

It’s funny how the states only have rights when it’s convenient for the federal government. For instance the states have a right to make their own gun laws when national reciprocity is being voted on but they don’t have the right to make their own gun laws when they want to make any gun sold and used in their state exempt from federal regulation. Well it looks like states don’t have the right to make legislation when it comes to their drivers either.

That said texting while driving is just fucking stupid. But just because something is fucking stupid doesn’t mean it should be made illegal. The fact of the matter is there is no way to enforce this law since phones can be used for a great many things. For instance my phone has Google Maps on it which I use to navigate my way around. But being I’m holding the phone to look at the map it looks like I’m texting.

Likewise reckless driving is already illegal hence if you are swerving around on the road while texting you are committing a crime and will most likely be pulled over. This law in effect will only exist to give police another reason to pull you over without having any actual reason to do so (sort of like Minnesota’s new mandatory seat belt law).

BATFE Changes to Short Barreled Rifle Rules

Snowflakes in Hell did a post looking at apparent changes in the BATFE rule book regarding pinned and welded extensions on barrels otherwise too short to avoid being labeled NFA weapons…

http://www.snowflakesinhell.com/2009/07/28/pin-weld-no-longer-viable/

The BATFE hand book can be found here…

http://www.atf.gov/firearms/nfa/nfa_handbook/index.htm

In summary the newest version of the NFA hand book appears to have taken out language that would allow pinned or welded accessories on a barrel being added into the length measurement of the barrel. Hence if you have a 15″ barrel with a 1″ pinned or welded flash suppressor it would now be considered a short barreled rifle.

This could turn many law abiding citizens into instant felons since this method has been used by many people to make their otherwise too short barrel long enough.

Minnesota Senators Screwed Us Hard

The results on the amendment vote were just posted…

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=111&session=1&vote=00237

Both Franken and Klobuchar voted against the amendment. Looks like a couple letters are in order here. It also shows us where our new senator stands on gun rights, and he’s standing on the wrong side.

Irony Defined, Knife Crime Up During Anti-Knife Campaign

Since Britain has all but banned guns they are now targeting the next evil weapon criminals use, knifes…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8161880.stm

They have run into a problem though. Knife crime is actually going up in areas they are targeting with their anti-knife campaign. This implies that telling criminals not to do something doesn’t prevent them from doing it. Who would have guessed that?

I wonder what will happen next. I’m betting some kind of ban on all knifes that can’t be used for sporting or cooking purposes. Eventually there will be a requirement to register all kitchen knives with the government and licenses will be required to own them. After that a total ban on all knives will occur. Afterwards they will go after blunt instruments. This will lead to law abiding citizens having no objects as most things can be used as a weapon while the criminals will still have guns, knives, and blunt instruments.

United Arab Emirate Upload Spyware to Blackberries, Research in Motion Posts Removal Tool

I must say my opinion of RIM just went from “I don’t really care” to “Wow talk about rock solid.” A United Arab Emirate telecom company call Etisalat posted an over the air update for its Blackberry users. Emirate said, “upgrades were required for service enhancements”. It turned out the update installed surveillance software produced by SS8 in California…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8161190.stm

From the article…

The update has now been identified as an application developed by American firm SS8. The California-based company describes itself as a provider of “lawful electronic intercept and surveillance solutions”.

Yup I’m sure the freedom loving rulers of the UAE wanted this only for lawful reasons. Wait a minute the UAE isn’t comprised of freedom loving rulers? They probably wanted this software to spy on its citizens? But if you’re not doing anything illegal you have nothing to hide hence why would you be uncomfortable with your government spying on you? Oh that’s right people like privacy.

Research in Motion, the makers of the Blackberry, stated they did not authorize or develop any such update. To alleviate this issue they have released a removal too which can be found here…

I say good on Research in Motion.

States have No Rights Says BATFE

Apparently the BATFE has more authority than the states…

http://www.examiner.com/x-1417-Gun-Rights-Examiner%7Ey2009m7d17-ATF-to-Tennessee-Were-above-your-law

The BATFE sent a letter to Tennessee to let it know it’s newly passed Firearms Freedom Act doesn’t apply. Apparently the BATFE is above even the constitution’s 10th amendment.

They are also telling this to Montana.

Three Britain Gun Ban Barrier Failures in a Row

Cripes! Another shooting in the country where their gun controls laws are supposed to be so strict no gun violence can occur…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/bradford/8156243.stm

The person who was shot was an officer no less. Of course being the gun ban is stopping criminals from using guns most officers in Oceania aren’t armed. And why would you want to arm people who are charged with brining criminals to justice anyways? It’s not like there is a need for them to have to defend themselves or anything.

Yet Another Person Shot in Britain

Wow the criminals in Oceania are dumb. They are using guns to shoot people even though hand guns are illegal…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/8155039.stm

This is just so shocking to me. I mean possessing and using hand guns are there which means criminals shouldn’t be using them. I mean it’s not like a criminal is going to break a second law when they are doing already criminal activity. That’s just not right.

Seriously they need more wizards to fix that magical gun ban barrier.
