This Would Have Been Nice Earlier

I’m a little paranoid about my data. I perform complete system backups to external hard drives on a regular basis but that doesn’t cover my apartment complex burning down. No for real data integrity you need a copy of your data offsite. To that extent I perform a nightly backup of my most important data to Amazon S3.

When accessing your Amazon S3 storage there are two keys you need. The first is the access key and the second is the secret key. Well a little over a month ago Amazon changed my access key meaning that if I lost my configuration file for my backup software I’d be boned as I could no longer generate or view the secret key for my previous access key.

This of course irritated me as I had to re-upload all my data using the new key to ensure long term survivability of my backup. Well Amazon just released a feature allow you to rotate access keys and most importantly view all your previous keys and their accompanying secret key. Yup that’s a great feature, sure would have loved to have that about a month ago.

Report from the Gun Show

As I posted earlier there was a gun show on Saturday and Sunday. I decided to head there on Saturday morning with one of my shooting buddies and one of my co-workers. First I’m going to talk about my co-worker. He has never been to a gun show and his exposure to firearms, from my understanding, is limited to shotguns used for hunting. He wants to eventually get a permit to carry but has no experience with handguns.

Well I figured a gun show would be a great place to bring him up to speed on the different types of handguns. We showed him semi-automatic pistols and revolvers. We explained the differences in shooting a very tiny handgun vs. shooting a larger handgun. We explained the differences between calibers. Heck we tried to cover everything we could. I feel accomplished as he seemed to learn quite a bit and hopefully the experience motivated him to get his permit to purchase (required in Minnesota for purchasing pistols and military pattern semi-automatic rifles).

But the best part was showing him the lies the general media says about gun shows. Of course since he never attended a gun show before he had no experience but believed what CNN, MSNB, CBS, etc. said. My co-worker believed it was a place where you could walk up to any table, pay cash for a gun, and walk out without performing the background check and paperwork. He was surprised when I picked up a Glock 30 and showed him the process for purchasing a firearm. I had to fill out the ATF form, present my driver’s license and permit to carry, and of course go the NICS check performed. It was an eye opener for him and I firmly believe everybody who thinks gun shows are a major source of illegal arms should attend a show and watch the process people go through to get guns.

As for the shot itself there are some things to note. First of all the prices of AR-15s and AK-47s are coming down. They aren’t at the same point they were before the Obamessiah was elected but are getting closer. Also I’d like to note the huge number of both types of rifles at the show, the shortage is officially over here in Minnesota. The same can be said of ammunition which has slowly been returning. Most of the vendors had plenty of ammunition in stock for all the popular calibers. The only thing that was in short supply were primers which are slowly trickling back in.

There were some good deals to be had and some horrible ones. It was obvious once again that if you attend a gun show check every table before you buy anything (unless that thing is rare enough where you are legitimately worried somebody else will buy it and nobody else will probably have it). On one side of the gun show the Glock 30 I picked up was going for $100.00 more than where I got it from. They were both brand new and came only with the standard load out (two magazines).

There weren’t as many people walking around selling personal guns this time. Likewise the number of people in attendance was quite a drop from the earlier gun show held at the same location around the beginning of the year.

My friend tried to sell his AK in .223 but was unable to do so. If anybody out there is looking for a like new AK rifle that shoots .223, has a milled receiver, and comes with eight magazines let me know and I’ll put you in contact with him.

Ron Paul Signed My Magazine

OK I have to post this immediately. I went to the student town hall meeting at the University of Minnesota campus. There representative Ron Paul was speaking and afterwards he did the rounds signing things. Here’s what I got him to sign:

Yes he signed my spare carry magazine which was loaded at the time. That’s how you test if a politician is pro-gun or not.

Ah the Internet how I Love Thee

So yeah I have to be in Boston on business. I’m the only one here tonight from work and don’t know my way around at all. Likewise my hotel is off the main transit lines. Thankfully due to knowing so many people online I have a contact here that was able to give me a ride from the airport to the hotel. Seriously this Internet thing isn’t only a great source of information but a great source of contacts.

Potential Light Blogging Again

Man I really hate saying this again and again, I’m starting to sound like a broken record. Anyways I’m traveling for work again and blogging may be rather light although due to the massive amount of light blogging as of late I’ll try not to let it slip.

I’ll try to get some preemptive stories posted that will publish tomorrow.

The Key to Negotiating

I found a quote on Slashdot form a user going by the name pete6677 that sums up the truth on negotiations:

This is what’s wrong with refusing to walk away from a deal. You have no negotiating leverage. When the other party knows you’re committed to buying no matter what, they have no reason to accommodate any request of yours.

They key is letting the party you are negotiating with know you’re willing to simply walk away if some of you wants aren’t met. The story this was posted in deals with the iPhone and the abuse of users by Apple and AT&T. Both companies know most people who are getting iPhones won’t walk away from any deal put in front of them, they want that phone period. Because of this they don’t allow many features people would find useful such as tethering and multi-tasking.

Never walk into any situation where you want to buy a product and allow the salesman to believe you aren’t willing to just walk away. I got some hefty discounts on my truck simply because I had a list of features that I knew none of their trucks had but their competitors did. Since they didn’t have anything with those features they gave me some discounts to make up for it.

This is also an important strategy when going to gun shows. Never purchase anything from a gun show without trying to negotiate a little bit. Many sellers will cut the price a bit, after all there is no guarantee somebody else will buy the item. This usually works best if you got to several gun shows and notice the seller has the same gun for sale at all of them. Likewise if you’re willing to pay cash often the sellers will cut you a bit of a deal as well.

Obviously haggling doesn’t always work. You won’t be able to walk into Target and negotiate the price of anything. But if you are dealing with a salesman who gets paid off of commission you generally have a good chance of netting either some discounts of free upgrades. The key is to make the salesman know you are willing to walk away.

Knowing how to barter is important, it can save you a lot of money over your life time.

I’m Back

Well I’m back at a computer again. The funeral went as well as could be expected and my Grandpa was giving the best send off I think any family can give a dead relative. Anyways updates should continue as normal again.

Probably No Blogging Until Tuesday

I know I said regular updates would return today but last night I received the unfortunate news that my grand father had died. The Funeral is on Monday and much has to be done before then. Likewise there is about a day of tasks for Tuesday set forth as well. Because of this updates on this site are going to most likely be completely stalled until Wednesday.
