Do Want

Everybody has strange esoteric things they like to collect and I’m not exception. I like to collect wrist watches with unique functions. My day-to-day watch is a Tissot T-Touch which has gadgets upon gadgets inside including a barometer, thermometer, compass, and altimeter. Previously I wrote a Fossil write PDA that ran Palm OS 4. Well somebody pointed me to a watch that is probably ungodly expensive but functions as a dosimeter.

A wristwatch that can detect radiation? I want one! I don’t expect to ever find it useful (although walking through the TSA’s back scatter scanners while wearing one could be interesting) but it has a stupid feature built into a wristwatch so it’s on my to-get list. If anybody has any idea what the going price of one of these things is please do let me know (and if you can tell me where to get one if the price is reasonable that would be appreciated as well).

Unfunded Retirement System Leads to Conflict Between Generations

When it comes to pension systems there are two types; funded and unfunded. Funded retirement systems are ones which you must put money into such as a savings account or a 401k plan. Unfunded systems are ones such as social security where tax money is used to pay for the pensions of the already retired. The problem is unfunded systems ultimately lead to a self perpetuating conflict between generations.

Unfunded systems ultimately lead to the retired voting for better benefits which leads to higher tax burdens on those still working. I think you can see where the resentment generates. The article is a good read.

Minnesota Senators, Stomping on Your Rights Since the Election

I went through the roll call for the bill to extend the expiring provisions of the PATRIOT Act. Guess what I found? Both of our senators, Franken and Klobuchar, voted in favor of extending the provisions.

Anybody want to join me is starting up a recall election? Neither of these pricks should be in office if they’re willing to shit all over our rights like this.

You know who didn’t vote for it? Rand Paul. Just sayin’ (he’s looking good and hopefully continues on this path).

Karma, It’ll Get You

Wizardpc over at Walls of the City posted one of the greatest demonstrations of karma being a bitch I have ever read. It’s so delicious in it’s irony I can’t even begin to exclaim my amusement. Anyways a kid hired a hit man to kill his parents only to be shot by the hit man:

Police said a group of boys and men went to the boy’s house in La Vergne on Wednesday night and knocked on the door. The 16-year-old answered the door and was shot twice. He was treated at Vanderbilt University Hospital and released with non-life-threatening injuries.

“He opened the door. He tried shutting the door and what we believe (is) that one of the persons outside the door got a foot in the door. He couldn’t shut it completely. He was able to shut the door after the shots were fired,” said police Chief Ted Boyd.

Wait for it… and now the pay off:

During an investigation, officers found the boy’s phone hidden in a couch in the house and reviewed text messages. Police said it appears the teen had hired someone to kill his parents. He texted that he had “three stacks,” or $3,000, and that he was thinking about doing it himself but couldn’t bring himself to.

My question is what this will do to the parents’ emotional state. First their child is shot and then they learned the kid was shot by a man who was originally paid by their son to kill them. The moral of the story? Don’t fuck with karma because it’ll fuck you back.

Yo Dawg I Heard You Liked Guns

Yo dawg I heard you liked guns so we put a gun on your gun so you can shoot while you shoot.

Will the railed mounted Saiga shotgun be the hot new accessory for the true operator’s arsenal? We shall see. Also note that the rail mounted Saiga has rails leading to the potential for infinite recursion of firearms mounted on firearms.

Taking Their Ball and Going Home

Quite the shit storm has hit Wisconsin. Their governor has introduced legislation that is disagreeable to the teacher union in an attempt to stop the state from hemorrhaging money. As you can guess many teachers are pissed because they may have to pay more into their pension account and may lose their collective bargaining rights. Either way some schools were shut down Thursday as teachers walked out. But that’s not the most interesting battle, not by a long shot.

To delay voting the Democrats at the Wisconsin capital walked out, refusing to vote in the hopes of delaying passage of the bill under scrutiny:

Walker, who took office last month, called on the Democrats to return to the Capitol and finish their work. Police were ordered to search for the lawmakers and bring them back to Madison.

“Their actions, by leaving the state and hiding from voting, are disrespectful to the hundreds of thousands of public employees who showed up to work today and the millions of taxpayers they represent,” Walker said.

Yes they stormed out and the governor sent the police after them. I wonder how government officials like having the right hand of their authority sent after them? Either way the Democrats, being politicians, knew what to do:

The 14 Democrats turned out to be holed up at a Best Western in Rockford, Ill., where, they said, Wisconsin law enforcement had no jurisdiction. They said they later dispersed, but remained outside the state.

Good move, get out of the state you represent. Obviously the democrats are cheering this action as heroic while the republicans are decrying this as cowardice. Personally I think it’s a failure to perform the jobs they were hired to do and should be fired immediately.

“Representatives” are elected to represent our interests in law making (they rarely do it but that’s their job). They are hired to debate issues and vote on legislation. By walking out the democrats in Wisconsin’s legislature are refusing to perform the job they were hired to do. In the private sector you would be fired for that kind of action and somebody willing to do the job would be hired. If I were the citizens of Wisconsin I’d demand a recall election for each legislator who fled the state, they aren’t doing the job you’re paying them to do. They should be at the capital right now explaining why the proposed legislation is bad not hiding in a hotel in Illinois probably paid for with tax payer money.

Simply taking your ball and going home is childish at best. Do the democrats in Wisconsin feel powerless to stop this proposed budget? Is that why they ran? Welcome to our world. Those of us outside of the legislature get fucked over by you pricks all the time when you pass legislation we disagree with but have no power to stop (see the Health Insurance Company Enrichment Act). The “representatives” who fled to Illinois are finally getting a taste of what the regular citizen gets every time a bad piece of legislation (in other words most legislation) gets crammed through against their wishes. Feeling powerless isn’t so great is it?

Mass Murder Magazines

Well it seems the anti-gunners are taking a liking to calling standard capacity magazines MASS MURDER MAGAZINES (it must be typed in all caps). Interesting marketing name but something with such a name really needs a warning label. Thankfully gun rights advocates are more than happy to help lazy anti-gunners out. Because of this generosity Robb has once again made an awesome logo. Behold the new warning label for MASS MURDER MAGAZINES:

Damn that’s bad ass. I wish I could get it printed on a t-shirt. Oh, wait I can!

Full Motion Video on an E-Ink Display

It’s not secret that I love E-Ink displays. Comparing reading on my Kindle to reading on my iPad always comes to the same conclusion, the Kindle is far superior for reading. Not only do E-Ink displays cause less stress on the eyes but they also consume far less power. The downside of E-Ink displays is the lack of color and the slow refresh speeds. It appears as through Bookeen may have found a solution to the latter problem and have demonstrated full motion video running on an E-Ink display. Bookeen claims that the display running in this mode sucks no more power than an LCD screen… that isn’t back lit.

Before anybody bitches that it’s not in color I realize that (believe it or not I can see color). Color E-Ink displays are in the works already. If we can get E-Ink displays to the point where they look comparable to modern LCDs we could increase the battery life on our mobile devices by a good margin (the main power sucker on modern smart phones and laptops are the displays). Likewise we’d actually be able to use out device in direct sunlight. Honestly I’m all for replacing current LCD technology with E-Ink displays once the technology has fully matured.

Chiappa Rhino Review

Via Jay over at MArooned I came across a review of the Chiappa Rhino.

In case you haven’t been paying attention to the wheel gun industry the Chiappa Rhino is a revolver that shoots from the bottom chamber instead of the stop. This is supposed to reduce recoil which all reviews I’ve read so far say it does. Everything I read about this gun makes me want to have one more.
