Senate Declaring American Soil a Battlefield

It doesn’t get more blatant than this, the Senate is moving to vote on the National Defense Authorization Act which has some interesting additions made behind closed doors:

The Senate is going to vote on whether Congress will give this president—and every future president — the power to order the military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians anywhere in the world. Even Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) raised his concerns about the NDAA detention provisions during last night’s Republican debate. The power is so broad that even U.S. citizens could be swept up by the military and the military could be used far from any battlefield, even within the United States itself.

The worldwide indefinite detention without charge or trial provision is in S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act bill, which will be on the Senate floor on Monday. The bill was drafted in secret by Sens. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.) and passed in a closed-door committee meeting, without even a single hearing.

[…]

In support of this harmful bill, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) explained that the bill will “basically say in law for the first time that the homeland is part of the battlefield” and people can be imprisoned without charge or trial “American citizen or not.” Another supporter, Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) also declared that the bill is needed because “America is part of the battlefield.”

Fascism is here ladies and gentlemen. Our “representatives” are voting on declaring our nation a battlefield, which will allow military personell to detain anybody without so much as charges being declared. The mere fact that senators of this country are even entertaining this idea demonstrates how far we’ve fallen from the original ideas of liberty this country was founded on.

I have no doubt that this erroneous legislation will be slammed through under the false pretense of national security and the war on terror. At this point I’m only hoping to alert people of this shit, it would take an insurmountable change of direction to steer our country around and move it back towards liberty, which I’m doubting more and more everyday is possible.

Continuing the Road to Persia

It appears as though Syria is going to be Obama’s next war:

The USS George H.W. Bush, the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, has reportedly parked off the Syrian coast. The move comes as the U.S. embassy in Damascus urged Americans to “immediately” leave the country.

[…]

Some Arab publications have reported this week that a no-fly zone will soon be put in place over Syria — similar to the one implemented over Libya last spring. And while such reports in the Arab press are often met with skepticism by western observers, the financial news service ZeroHedge flagged down a report from the respected private intelligence company Stratfor stating that CVN 77, better known as the George H.W. Bush, had left the strategically vital Straits of Hormuz for the Syrian coast.

Parking aircraft carriers off of their coast and telling American citizens within the country to leave is not a good sign for those living in the country. After Libya Obama has learned that he can move our country into war without so much as a nod of Congress’s head so there is little chance of preventing this war from starting if our Dear Leader desires it. I guess it makes sense to move into Syria as we’re not currently risking the lives of enough soliders or sinking enough money into overthrowing regimes we originally put into power.

It would be nice if our country adopted a foreign policies that involved something besides killing foreigners. Were we to do that we’d save trillions of dollars and reduce the amount of hatred directed towards our country by outside nations.

Apparently if Ron Paul Wins the Republican Nomination It’ll be Blamed on Evil Hackers

I’ve always through Thom Hartman was an idiot and a shill but he really putting his dickery into overdrive this time:

Today we learned that our democracy could be hacked by an eighth grader with 26 bucks.

That’s what a security assessment team with the US Department of Energy discovered when they successfully hacked into a Diebold electronic voting machine – and were able to change voting results without leaving a trace behind.

[…]

And today – with the rise of hack-activist groups like Anonymous – this gaping hole in the security of our elections – could be exploited for absurd purposes.

We’ve already seen what Anonymous is capable of – from taking down government websites in Tunisia – Egypt – Libya – Syria – and Bahrain – to hacking into emails belong to the security firm HB Gary Federal – to taking on Bank of America – to organizing mass protests against San Francisco’s transportation system – to most recently uncovering the identity of a New York City cop who maced women on Wall Street and posting his name, address, and family members on the web – and the list really goes on and on and on.

So imagine – if they and other hackers coordinated together to hack into voting machines nationwide – and skew the voting results of, say, the Republican Party Primaries coming up in a couple of months.

Suddenly – Libertarian hero Ron Paul might be the guy to take on President Obama.

Emphasis mine. Apparently Thom believes the only way Ron Paul can get the nomination is if evil hackers circumvent our democracy and use security holes in electronic voting machines to rig the results. Is Thom trying to start a meme to throw out election results if Ron Paul wins because it could only happen if hackers rigged the vote?

I guess Dr. Paul couldn’t get the nomination simply by being the only candidate with a brain. With that said everybody is well aware of the fact that these voting machines are vulnerable to attack and that is why many of us had opposed their adoption.

The Five Stages of Political Grief

I’m rather glad many of my friends are finally waking up to the fact that politicians lie. It’s somewhat sad to watch the vicious and painful transition one has to make when they go from believing their “representatives” have the best intentions of their constituents in mind to knowing said “representatives” have only their own self-interset in mind. This fact has become apparent with the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), which Al Franken (former hero of my friends for his support of net neutrality) and Amy Klobuchar (I have no idea what anybody every liked her) are cosponsors of.

At this point I would say many of my friends are experiencing one of the five stages of grief. Some are still in denial, trying to convince themselves that this is a mistake and that both senators will revoke their cosponsorship one they receive an e-mail or letter explaining what SOPA really is. Other friends are in the stage of anger, they demand to know what justification either senator has to supporting this bill. A few are at the stage of bargaining, hoping they can offer the senators something in exchange for revocation of their sponsorship of the bill. Just a couple of my friends have progressed for the fourth stage of depression, they are finally realized that their elected “representatives” care not at all for their constituency. I would put myself at the stage of acceptance as I know our “representatives” don’t care about anybody but themselves and honestly I don’t really care anymore. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) I never had to transcend the five stages of grief in regards to my political views because I never really believed politicians existed for any reason other than fucking us all over to get what they want. Due to this fact I can’t offer my friends any help of advice to make their transcendence through the stages of grief any easier.

I can offer some small advice to those currently in the bargaining stage. You may believe Franken and Klobuchar care about your vote but ultimately they do not. This is because one vote has never turned an election and they have legions of loyal suckers willing to reelect them next year. Both senators also enjoy the state of being incumbents and we all know incumbents enjoy a very high chance of reelection unless they’ve done something incredibly despicable (think personally scandalous, not fucking over their constituency by voting for bad legislation since few voters keep track of such things). While you offer your vote your competition, those supporting SOPA, are offering massive campaign contributions and the promise of plush, well-paying lobbyist jobs when the senators exit politics. In a very real sense one side is offering nothing at all while the other is offering untold riches and power.

I’m sorry many of you have to wakeup to this fact the hard way. Having your entire world view smashed is never easy but I can say for certainty, as somebody who has accepted the situation for what it is, that things get better. Once you realize you’re being fucked over and learn how you’re being fucked over your attitude improves greatly. There is something uplifting about simply having this knowledge.

Oracle Submits One of the Dumbest Court Filings Ever Conceived

Oracle is a company I hold no love for. Their products never impressed me (probably because I have no need for a proprietary high-end database system) and I hate what they ended up doing with the products and services they obtained from the Sun Microsystems acquisition. Yet Oracles latest court filing really takes the cake:

Hewlett-Packard has secretly contracted with Intel to keep making Itanium processors so that HP can maintain the appearance that “a dead microprocessor is still alive”, and make money from its locked-in Itanium customer base and take business away from Oracle’s Sun servers, Oracle said in a court filing on Friday.

That’s right, Oracle is throwing a hissy fit because they believe Hewlett-Packard (HP) are secretly floating money to Intel in order to keep the Itanium processo alive. My questions is this: who fucking cares? When one company gives another money in trade for a good or service that is called a transaction. As these transactions are agreements made between two entities neither is obligated to reveal the details to anybody else.

Why is Oracle wasting taxpayer money by bring up the fact HP and Intel do business in court? This isn’t a secret, anybody with an HP computer knows this as it’s advertised by a sticker on the computer that says, “Intel Inside.” If HP is paying Intel money to continue production of the Itanium processor what does it matter? What justification is there for bringing up this fact in court?

Tactics to destroy competition like this is one of the many things wrong with the United States economic system. Were the state controlled courts willing to simply toss this type of stupidity out the door money would be saved but businesses throughout the country and that money could be put to productive use. Instead our economy is so intermingled with government that you can’t make a single move without filling out the correct form in triplicate and getting the expensive rubber stamp of approval. Our court system needs to stop being a mechanism for companies to destroy competition through monetary attrition.

Abraham Lincoln was a Prick

Somebody is probably going to call me a racist for saying President Lincoln was an asshole but anybody with even a small amount of knowledge regarding the events that lead to the Civil War knows Lincoln didn’t give two shits about freeing the slaves. The only thing Lincoln cared about was making the states respect his authoritah which is noted by his rather sick way of telling Maryland to get with the program or face annihilation:

Lieutenant-General Scott

MY DEAR SIR: The Maryland legislature assembles to-morrow at Annapolis, and not improbably will take action to arm the people of that State against the United States. The question has been submitted to and considered by me whether it would not be justifiable, upon the ground of necessary defense, for you, as General in Chief of the United States Army, to arrest or disperse the members of that body. I think it would not be justifiable nor efficient for the desired object.

First. They have a clearly legal right to assemble, and we can not know in advance that their action will not be lawful and peaceful, and if we wait until they shall have acted their arrest or dispersion will not lessen the effect of their action.

Secondly. We can not permanently prevent their action. If we arrest them, we can not long hold them as prisoners, and when liberated they will immediately reassemble and take their action; and precisely the same if we simply disperse them–they will immediately reassemble in some other place.

I therefore conclude that it is only left to the Commanding General to watch and await their action, which, if it shall be to arm their people against the United States, he is to adopt the most prompt and efficient means to counteract, even, if necessary, to the bombardment of their cities and, in the extremest necessity, the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus.

Your obedient servant,

ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

Emphasis mine. It’s pretty ballsy, even today, for a president to openly say, “Do as I say or face bombardment of your cities. Also fuck habeas corpus, I’m not dealing with pesky little things like the rule of law.” Remember that Maryland hadn’t seceded from the Union at this point (and ultimately never did) yet the President threatened to bombard their cities anyways. It’s usually considered bad taste to threaten violence against those who haven’t actually initiated violence against you yet (and in the case of secession no violence was ever initiated until the North decided to declare bloody war agains the South).

This executive order clearly displays that Lincoln was on a power trip while he was in office and cared more about authority than anything else, including the lives of American people. His threat didn’t imply the capture or assassination of Maryland government officials but indiscriminate bombarding of Maryland cities.

I also find it disturbing that Lincoln signed a letter threatening to kill people of Maryland with, “Your obedient servant.” A property ending to the letter would have been, “Your lord and master.” If you’re going to be a tyrannical asshole you should at least be honest about it.

It Must be Hard to Fit this Much Corruption into a Single Issue

I’m not sure how the politicians that make up our government manage to fit so much corruption into apparently cut and dry issues. When one arm of the government is declaring the need for more vegetables and less potatoes in school lunches another arm of the government is declaring pizza a vegetable and axing the recommendation that children eat less potatoes. It must be difficult working inside an entity so massive and so full of corruption that one arm is actively working against another arm because different lobbyist target different politicians. Just look at the recent mess involving federally subsidized school lunches and weep at the mess we call government:

The final version of a spending bill released late Monday would unravel school lunch standards the Agriculture Department proposed earlier this year. These include limiting the use of potatoes on the lunch line, putting new restrictions on sodium and boosting the use of whole grains. The legislation would block or delay all of those efforts.

The bill also would allow tomato paste on pizzas to be counted as a vegetable, as it is now. USDA had wanted to only count a half-cup of tomato paste or more as a vegetable, and a serving of pizza has less than that.

Nutritionists say the whole effort is reminiscent of the Reagan administration’s much-ridiculed attempt 30 years ago to classify ketchup as a vegetable to cut costs. This time around, food companies that produce frozen pizzas for schools, the salt industry and potato growers requested the changes and lobbied Congress.

The only way so many special interests can be involved in a single issue is if the government is meddling. I’m sure vegetable growers were the ones who petitioned the Agriculture Department to first enact it’s recommendations and then companies that produce frozen pizza, seeing their business may be in jeopardy, petitioned government to overrule those recommendations through legislation. While everybody scoffs at Congress’s attempt to redefine what a vegetable is the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is busy making themselves out to be hypocrites:

“While it’s unfortunate that some members of Congress continue to put special interests ahead of the health of America’s children, USDA remains committed to practical, science-based standards for school meals,” she said in a statement.

Emphasis mine. Let’s look back at a the previous quote, specifically the part that states, “USDA had wanted to only count a half-cup of tomato paste or more as a vegetable, and a serving of pizza has less than that.” How does the amount of tomato paste scientifically define whether or not it is a vegetable? Last I hear tomatoes were scientifically classified as fruit. What a bunch of hypocritical assholes.

Not only is Congress and USDA involved in this but even the military has a pony in this race:

A group of retired generals advocating for healthier school lunches also criticized the spending bill. The group, called Mission: Readiness, has called poor nutrition in school lunches a national security issue because obesity is the leading medical disqualifier for military service.

Obviously the biggest problem with increased obesity in the United States is that it reduce the number of people available to send overseas to kill foreigners! We need to stop this before we don’t have enough troops to occupy the ~140 countries we currently have bases in!

Let’s recap on everybody involved in this issue. We have USDA, Congress, lobbyists for numerous agriculture organizations, scientific organizations, healthcare organization, retired military personell, and school children. The last group is the one who has no say but are getting fucked over regardless of the outcome.

All of these groups are involved in what is essentially a simple problem: determining what food will be served at public schools. People across the nation solved this problem on a daily fucking basis when they decide what they’re going to make for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. That’s right, those idiots in government can’t solve a problem that is essentially figuring out what one is going to eat for a meal and we trust them with market regulations, foreign relations, and nuclear weaponry. Think about that last sentence for a while and then ask yourself why the hell we trust these morons to decide anything of importance.

My Recommendations for the GOP Presidential Nominees

After watching numerous Republican Part (GOP) debates I’ve arrived at recommendations for each of the presidential nominees:

Jon Huntsman: Go home. Seriously.

Rick Santorum: Stop being Rich Santorum. Seriously, everything Rich Santorum currently does, stop doing. Also wipe that stupid looking grin off of your face, it makes you look like a sleazy used car salesman (although I trust a sleazy used car salesman more than you).

Newt Gingrich: Trying being consistant for once. Your positions bounce back and forth faster than a tennis ball at Wimbledon.

Michele Bachmann: Stop name dropping Obama. We get it, the President is a failure, but you can’t blame him for anything and everything. Try finding some new scapegoats so you can name drop some other political opponents. With that said you seem to realize that you’re losing and that has caused you to lash out at the other candidates, which is terribly amusing. Keep that up.

Rick Perry: Remember your lines. Showing up to the debates sober would probably help you out as well.

Mitt Romney: Try being something besides Republican Obama. Judging by the President’s approval ratings I don’t think this country is asking for four more years of the same guy.

Herman Cain: Try saying something besides, “America needs a bold new plan and my 999 plan delivers that.” My friends and I have a GOP debate drinking game and one of the rules is to drink every time you say “bold” or “999.” By far you are the candidate forcing us to drink the most. Try making up a couple new catch phrases so you’re not repeating the same damned thing every time you appear on screen, it’ll make you slightly less boring and idiotic.

Ron Paul: At the beginning of every debate look to your left then look to your right. See the people around you? Those idiots are your competition. As the only candidate who regularly gets invited to the debates with a brain you need to start speaking up even if the moderators aren’t giving you permission. The moderators aren’t going to give you screen time so you’ll just have to take it. Besides that keep being awesome.

Gary Johnson: Just walk in during the next debate, you’re a valid candidate and shouldn’t let idiot planners stop you from delivering your message. Besides Ron Paul you’re the only candidate who isn’t a moron.

Cronyism in Action

You scratch my back:

Solyndra, the now-shuttered California company, had been a poster child of President Obama’s initiative to invest in clean energies and received the administration’s first energy loan of $535 million. But a year ago, in October 2010, the solar panel manufacturer was quickly running out of money and had warned the Energy Department it would need emergency cash to avoid having to shut down.

And I’ll scratch yours:

But in an Oct. 30, 2010, e-mail, advisers to Solyndra’s primary investor, Argonaut Equity, explain that the Energy Department had strongly urged the company to put off the layoff announcement until Nov. 3. The midterm elections were held Nov. 2, and led to Republicans taking control of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Corruption is unavoidable when the government bribes individuals and businesses with money stolen from the public.

Let’s Drive the Point Home on the SOPA

The government seems determined to slam the Stop Online Piracy Act through the legislative process in order to appease their big copyright holding donors. I feel we need to drive home the erroneous nature of this legislation, which will allow copyright holders to shut down Internet sites by filing copyright infringement claims against said sites. There is a legal gray area known as song lyrics. Many recording companies claim copyright over song lyrics and thus feel posting said lyrics without permission constitutes a violation of their copyright.

Knowing this I propose an the following: Let us to the We the People petition site, create numerous petitions containing copy written song lyrics, and then report the violations to the copyright holders. Under SOPA there would be the potential that the White House website would need to be taken down as it would be violating copyright laws. The only way to get the attention of politicians is if you give them a taste of their own medicine.
