Some Things I Just Don’t Get

Recently at the range I was preceded by another person. He was shooting a Sig in 9mm while the only gun I brought was my Glock 30SF. I’m one to never insult another person’s gun at the range. If you like it I’m happy for you and who am I to judge? This guy didn’t not have that same belief.

No sooner did I put the target up and get the gun out of its holster he had to comment. “Is that a Glock?” A simple enough question to which I answered, “Yes.” That was my entire answer, nothing snobbish followed or preceded. His response on the other hand was, “Pfft plastic tupperware. Why not get a real gun made out of metal?” This struck me as odd because the range I attend is almost exclusively populated by decent people. Of course we’re putting a new door up so currently anybody can waltz right in so he may not have been a member, in fact I’m doubting he was one.

My answer was simply, “Because I like it.” After that I put on double ear protection in the vain attempt to not be able to hear him. He made a few more quips but I pretended I couldn’t hear them and just kept shooting.

This brings me to something I just don’t get. That something is a hatred of plastic framed pistols. I understand if you prefer metal guns, that’s your business. But it’s kind of hard to claim plastic frame pistols are junk when most of them have proven very reliable. The Glock, XD, and M&P lines of pistols are pretty well known for reliability. Yes there are lemons but for the most part they work well. In a carry gun that’s my primary concern, reliability. I want the gun to go bang when I pull the trigger and no go bang when I’m not pulling the trigger. But I also want something light as possible which plastic does well. I’m also a fan of how resistant plastic is to corrosion (In other words it doesn’t corrode). The gun is sitting against my body all day which means sweat and oil is getting on it, something resistant to corrosion is very nice.

I’ve not heard one conclusive argument stating why plastic guns are worse than steel guns. Yes they are lighter and therefore you received more felt recoil. That’s not really a concern of mine and it is a poor argument against a gun. That argument would lead one to accept heavier guns are better and therefore Hi-Points are the cream of the crop.

Another argument I hear and often laugh at is you can’t club somebody with a plastic frame pistol. Yes you can. The entire slide is still metal and the plastic is pretty impact resistant so it’s not going to crack under stress form beating somebody with the slide. But if you’re in a position where you must use the gun as a club instead of a gun you have bigger immediate issues than what your gun is made out of.

My friend often jokes that the gun will melt if you put it in an oven at 400 degrees (Fahrenheit since I’m in the United State). Of course many people say such things and are serious. Here is the fact of the matter. If your in a temperature hot enough to melt your gun’s frame you’re also dying from that same heat. The human body can’t take as much heat as the plastic frame of a pistol. I’m also not one to accidentally leave my gun in an oven.

One thing I will say is in a kaboom situation plastic frame guns generally fare worse than their metal frame brethren. But you really have to look at the common cause of kaboom situations. It’s generally done with reloaded ammunition (The reloader made a mistake and overloaded the round) or ammunition that has been constantly rechambered again and again (Bullet setback increases pressure when the round is finally fired). Both of these can be avoided and should be.

I understand if you prefer metal guns, that’s great. But if it’s due to anything beyond personal preference I don’t think you’re criteria are as realistic as you believe.

That is all.

Mayors Against Civil Rights Secret Document

Snowflakes in Hell let us know that California Gun Laws has obtained a copy of Mayors Against Illegal Any Guns Blueprint for Federal Actions. God I love Freedom of Information requests. Head over to the site, register, download, read, and get angry.

I’m still diving through it but Snowflakes in Hell already got through it and made a nice list of what those pricks are planning. And let me tell you it has nothing to do with illegal anything.

Beyond Stupidity

Says Uncle brings up a link that really makes me both sick and enraged at the same time. From the article:

But as a progressive, I would sooner lay my child to rest than succumb to the belief that the use of a gun for self-defense is somehow not in itself a gun crime.

So this individual would rather see his child dead than admit that self-defense is a natural right? This kind of logic is downright pathetic, hell even deadly. Let’s take a moment to consider this.

The author would rather his child DIE than ADMIT self defense isn’t a crime. I’m truly at a loss for words. I’m assuming Doug The Author isn’t a father because I can’t think of any father who would rather their child die than ANYTHING, let alone simply admit something.

TSA Get it All Wrong Again

So another terrorist prick tries to blow up a plane. Just what we needed right? Well TSA is further proving their motto of, “We’re not happy until you’re not happy.” They’ve implemented a bunch of pointless rules that are so blatantly meaningless that I fail to see the reason they were even thought about. Of course security expert Bruce Schneier has something to say about it:

And what sort of magical thinking is behind the rumored TSA rule about keeping passengers seated during the last hour of flight? Do we really think the terrorist won’t think of blowing up their improvised explosive devices during the first hour of flight?

Yes that’s right keep people seated for the last hour of the flight. What will this do? Make the terrorist attempt to blow up the plane sooner. Of course he mentioned this is a rumor and it would seem asinine to believe except the TSA have done equally dumb before. It’s believable. He also mentioned the only two things that have been done that make flying safer:

Only two things have made flying safer [since 9/11]: the reinforcement of cockpit doors, and the fact that passengers know now to resist hijackers.

But the best quote is this:

Only one carry on? No electronics for the first hour of flight? I wish that, just once, some terrorist would try something that you can only foil by upgrading the passengers to first class and giving them free drinks.

I agree, very strongly.

Glock Lawsuit

I found this one in a Glocktalk thread last night but didn’t get to posting it. Some guy ran into trouble with his Glock 36. He sent it into Glock, they replaced a part and it was sent back. The problem continued. He sent it in again and after six months they returned it saying the gun was within specs. In the end he had to take them to small claims court where he did end up winning.

That’s a pretty pathetic way to handle your customers Glock. Just saying.

Congress Members Trying to Bar Posting of Sensitive Government Documents

Remember the lead of the TSA Standard Operating Procedures document a bit back? Well it appears as though three jackass congressmen want to make it illegal for websites to post such materials. From the article:

In their letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano (.pdf) on Wednesday, Reps. Peter T. King (R – New York), Charles Dent (R – Pennsylvania) and Gus Bilirakis (R – Florida) asked, “How has the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration addressed the repeated reposting of this security manual to other websites, and what legal action, if any, can be taken to compel its removal?”

They also asked if DHS is “considering issuing new regulations pursuant to its authority in Section 114 of Title 49, United States Code, and are criminal penalties necessary or desirable to ensure such information is not reposted in the future?”

That’s right Peter T. King, Charles Dent and, Gus Bilirakis want to bar websites from posting leaked government documents because our transparent government by the people and for the people doesn’t want citizens to see such documents.

Because I’m in a rather prickish mood I thought I’d do my duty and post the document on this site. So here it is everybody a copy of the TSA Standard Operating Procedures [PDF] document. Enjoy.

Alan Grayson is an Asshole

That’s my official stance since Random Nuclear Strikes has reported Florida Representative jackass Alan Grayson has threatened to give fives years of prison time to somebody who dares criticize him.

Well when I see somebody doling out threats to people using the first amendment I like to help by exercising my freedom of speech. Mr. Grayson I provide you with this:

Go fuck yourself with it. Also you’re an asshole.

And Time Magazine’s Man of the Year Is

The man of the year is master of mishap, the destroyer of money, the patron of government interference in industry, none other than Mr. Fucktard himself Ben Bernankey. I didn’t realize the award was given to the most incompetent person of the year.

Yeah you have to love the fact Time Magazine awarded this to one of the people that not only helped cause the current economic depression but has also done everything in his powers to extend it’s affects. Of course Time Magazine also proved it doesn’t understand basic economics:

The magazine said the recession itself was the story of the year and without Mr Bernanke at the helm it would have been a lot worse.

Actually in a free market this depression recession wouldn’t have occurred in the first place. The current financial failure wad due in part to the Federal Reserver’s attempt to create a state of constant prosperity. They did this by extending credit, printing money, bottoming out interest rates, and anything else they could do to take resources away from where they were needed most and place them where they would do no good.

Because We Don’t Have Enough Prisons

So it looks like the denizens of Gitmo are being transferred to the United States. Where do you hold inmates of such a camp? In one of the thousands of prisons in this country of course. Of course Obama is not one to be frugal with money and seeing another opportunity to waste tax payer money he’s order the following:

US President Barack Obama has ordered the federal government to buy a prison in Illinois to take a number of inmates from Guantanamo Bay.

Yeah not rent, lease, or requisition but buy it. Oh Obama will you ever learn the concept of frugalness? I think not in his presidency.
