Izhmash Shows New AK Prototype

When The Firearm Blog says they have big news they mean it. It seems Izhmash has introduced a prototype for their updated AK series of rifles. The updates are certainly a case of evolution not revolution but when you’re platform for evolve is the ever prevalent and legendary AK-47 there isn’t much need for a revolution.

The first noticeable improvement should make the tacticool people out there happy, rails. Yes when somebody said the AK needs more rails Izhmash listened. The dust cover now has a rail running along its top. Likewise the dust cover is now hinged to the front and has a locking lever that holds it on to the rifle. This is apparently to prevent a loss of zero on optics mounted on the dust cover rails. Likewise the hand guards are now covered in rails.

The AK prototype also has a new safety by the trigger which should be easier to manipulate than the standard AK safety/selector switch. The prototype still has the old safety on it but being it’s a prototype that could be left on or taken off in the final design. The rear sight has an adjustment knob instead of the old slider that was used for elevation changes.

Anyways head over to the Firearm Blog as they have a lot of pictures and go over more details.

Who’s the Hero of Russia

The Firearm Blog brings some good news. Russia has bestowed its highest award, Hero of the Russian Federation, upon a man we all know and love, Mikhail Kalashnikov.

This was awarded on Mr. Kalashnikov’s 90th birthday. It’s good to see the man who invented the most popular rifle to ever exist is getting his due recognition.

Interesting Idea from Palm

Palm is certainly working on interesting ideas. WebOS, although lacking, is certainly interesting since you can write applications using standard web development tools. Well Palm has a new tool to make development easy.

Ares is a web based WebOS development tools. Apparently it’s supposed to make already easy development (seriously WebOS is dead simple to write applications for) process easier.

There aren’t many details on the new tool but Palm did give a live demonstration at this year’s Open Mobile Summit. From that it’s known that nothing needs to be installed on the machine you’re developing with (everybody runs in a web browser) and apparently things are all drag-and-droppy.

Anyways I just thought it was something interesting to bring up.

The Fifth of November

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t’was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli’ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England’s overthrow;
By God’s providence he was catch’d (or by God’s mercy*)
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring. (Holla*)
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!
And what should we do with him? Burn him!

Ah if only jolly old England had the same drive for revolution as they did back then. Anyways happy Guy Fawkes day everybody.

Tom Emmers

Every Wednesday evening me and other members of Campaign for Liberty sit down and have dinner. Last night we were joined by potential Minnesota Governor Republican candidate Tom Emmer. You can imagine that any candidate that sits down with us for several hours is probably going to be closer to a libertarian than a neo-conservative which, by what he said throughout the night, is very true.

I’ve mentioned Representative Emmer on this blog before after he introduced the Minnesota Firearms Freedom Act which emulates the same act passed in Montana. I talked to him briefly about it, mainly asking why there was an exemption for machine guns. This is always a good litmus test to see if a candidate is pro-gun or not as many will give reasoning why machine guns are horrible weapons that civilians shouldn’t have. Tom said he didn’t realize such a clause was in there and asked me to e-mail him the part of the bill that says that as he felt it shouldn’t be in there. I did e-mail him although haven’t heard back yet but alas this means one of two things. First he just fucked up or two he didn’t know what was in his own bill. Either way he said he didn’t see a difference between machine guns and any other type of firearm. Good.

I then asked him about suppressors. He lives right down the street from the range I go to (I didn’t know that previously) and admitted to enjoying the sound of gun fire (another good thing). But he agreed that suppressors should be legal in Minnesota as well. That question was more or less for my person interest on the subject.

Finally I asked him what he thought about Alaska and Vermont style carry laws. Once again Mr. Emmer thought they were great. He also said in his opinion the licensing thing we have in this state was nothing more than a method to appease law enforcement officers and felt we should be able to practice our right to bear arms without any for of licensing. He also made a quick mention about how we should get a clause in the Minnesota constitution proclaiming citizens’ right to bear arms (we have no such clause).

Overall I was very impressed with him, even on issues outside of guns. He is certainly a person to keep an eye on for Minnesota governor.

If You Carry Always Carry

Well Caleb over a Gun Nuts had an encounter with the knife wielding criminal kind. His method of self defense was quite good in that there was the use of a projectile weapon that persuaded the criminal to stop. The projectile weapon in this case was coffee followed by a Beretta aimed at the would be mugger now a coffee soaked running man.

This happened in broad daylight in a parking lot which goes to show bad guys can appear anywhere at any time. If you carry always carry (unless you legally can’t or will get fired for doing it).

With Time All Things Can and Will Happen

It’s true given enough time anything can happen. For instance I swung over to The Firearm Blog and found out Hell will soon be importing heavy Russian winter coats. Apparently The Saudi market will have something new for sale, handguns! From the article:

Saudis will be able to buy handguns and other personal firearms openly for the first time, the country’s interior ministry has anounced.

Why? Well because:

The move is aimed at reining in the widespread illegal ownership of handguns and assault weapons, a Saudi official said.

Apparently making gun ownership illegal doesn’t stop people from getting guns. Who knew? We’ll have to see if this affects their crime rate and if blood will flow through the streets like the anti-gun crowd claim happens when you loosen gun control laws.

Best Talk on Al Gore’s Apocalypse I’ve Heard

OK last week I attended a speech by Christopher Monckton. The subject at hand was Al Gore’s apocalypse, a.k.a. global warming, a.k.a. climate change, a.k.a. CO2 is going to kill us all. Mr. Monckton presented a lot of great information and showed how those who are claiming CO2 is causing “global warming” (even though we’ve been in a cooling trend for a few years) have lied.

Here is the YouTube video of his presentation:

His slide show is also available from the link (you should follow that while watching the video). The treaty he talks bout at the end of the speech is also available from the link.
